Baltimore Makes the Cut

I never thought of Forbes as God’s leading magazine for pointing out the modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah’s (I thought the Sword of the Lord held that honor).  Regardeless, Forbes has come out with the top ten list of America’s most sinful cities based on the seven deadly sins “lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride.”  Read the full story here

Baltimore made the list for two different sins.  One, Baltimore ranked in at #9 on the lust list. Here’s the breakdown for Baltimore:

ACNielsen Index Total Contraceptives (per capita): 160
Average Index: 100
Percentage more of contraceptive sales: 60%

Index for Female Contraceptives: 173
 Lust #9

Average Index: 100
Percentage more of female contraceptive sales: 73%

Index for Male Contraceptives: 158
Average Index: 100
Percentage more of male contraceptive sales: 58%

And if you’re disappointed that we’re only number nine, fret not, we came in at #2 for the sin of wrath.  Forbes said,

Baltimore had 276 cases of murder and non-negligent manslaughter in 2006, or 43.3 murders per 100,000 residents. It came in at No. 5 for violent crime, No. 9 for robbery and No. 62 for rape.

Andrew Jones points out that the Bible Belt cities take the gold in the gluttony category.  Makes you wonder…

  • Interesting statistics. So how do we approach manslaughter? One block at a time?

  • Can’t speak out of authority here, but I’d say that most modern countries are approaching the realms of Sodom. But whether a block at a time or a person at a time we keep preaching an inerrant gospel from an inerrant book given to us by an inerrant, infallible God who’s in the business of changing lives for His glory!.

Ever feel like Jonah going to Ninevah(sp)? Minus the rebellion, big fish and anger over revival of course.

  • [...] Recently a couple blogs that I frequent have made mention of a recent magazine article that rated the most sinful U.S. cities.  If you get a chance check out the posts at Al Mohler’s blog and at Joel Kurz’s blog. [...]
