II can’t ignore this one – it interests me.

Do you believe that Oprah’s public endorsement of Barack Obama will long-term affect this election?  I have my ideas, however, before I share I want to hear yours.

  • I like how you state your question?

“Do you believe that Oprah’s public endorsement Barack Obama will *long-term* affect this election?”

You did not ask whether the endorsement is positive or negative.

    I like it.
    I like it a lot.

I am curious if celebrities do have a long-lasting affect on voters. Do voters actually remember who endorsed candidates?

Maybe voters take the endorsements to the polls. Maybe they do not.

When the people speak and America has a new president, then the endorsements prove long-term.

I pray that the American people would make up their own dang minds.

  • I think that Obama’s success or lack there of will have more of an impact on Oprah’s credibility in the future…

This is the first chance that she has had to back a potential loser, rather than a sure thing…

  • From the mind of a gameshow host:

“Does anyone decide which candidate to choose based on the recommendation of a TV talk show host or a singer/actress? If any group of citizens is uniquely unqualified to tell someone else how to vote, it’s those of us who live in the sheltered, privileged arena of celebrityhood. It’s one thing to buy an ab machine because Chuck Norris recommends it (he’s in good shape, isn’t he?) or a grill because George Foreman’s name is on it (he’s a great guy, so it must be a great grill!), but the idea of choosing the Leader of the Free World based on the advice of someone who lives in the cloistered world of stardom seems a bit loony to me.” -Pat Sajak

  • Thanks for the quote Scott. Good point. It’s a scary thing when people look to their hero for answers.

Snoop – interesting thought, time will tell. Personally not sure if an Obama loss would hurt the Oprah empire.

My thoughts: Oprah’s endorsement is huge for ol’ Barack. He already has a large democratic support (though not as large as Hillary) but I personally know a load of conservatives who are Oprah fanatics. This could do something interesting.

  • regardless of who supports who, i think that the democrats have a fatal flaw this election cycle in that the front runners are minorities…

I am not sure that this country will elect a minority candidate yet…

  • I have my doubts about how much good she can do for him. I think Oprah’s endorsement of Obama will probably have a significantly greater effect on his chances than most endorsements do; although, Oprah’s impact will be less as a simple result of her endorsement than it will be as a result of her using her immense star power to actually campaign for him. I think that Oprah may be overestimating her clout and after the initial media attention dies back some and she has been campaigning with him for a while her O factor will become diluted by the fact that she is in politics. A read today that a NY Times – CBS poll showed only 1% of voters saying her endorsement would positively affect their vote for him and 14% say it will negatively affect their vote. The same poll showed 44% of voters saying Bill Clinton’s endorsement would positively affect their vote for Hillary versus 7% saying negative. If Obama makes the Democratic nomination this could turn around some, especially if he gets both Oprah’s and Clinton’s support. I don’t put too much confidence in the relevance of these polls, though. I doubt we will ever know how many Obama votes result from Oprah’s endorsement. Voters probably aren’t honest with themselves anyway about whether or not they allow an endorsement to shape their opinion, and if they aren’t honest with themselves then they won’t be honest in a poll either.
As for me, I will probably vote for whoever Sajak endorses.

  • Luke, I’m waiting to see how you will vote so I know who to vote for.

  • Luke and Joel, you need to see how Snoop votes. He is the one with the answer. I am waiting to see how Snoop votes.

  • I am voting for James Dobson.
